Ranvir Thapar Blog 2 Quarter 1 - Shower Thoughts of a Conspiracy Theorist

September 11, 2001, a day etched into American history, the worst foreign attack on US soil. 2,977 innocent men and women lost their lives due to religious extremists who thought the best way to show America who’s boss is by murdering innocent people. The horrific acts committed on that fateful day were swiftly met with resistance and anger. Within 1 month CIA operatives were working in Afghanistan to take down Al-Qaeda operatives, air strikes were being launched against key targets, and troops were deployed. America was at war.

But what if 9/11 was an inside job? What if the real enemy wasn’t the one killed in a compound on the outskirts of Abbottabad, Pakistan? What if we’ve been lied to and conned for the past 24 years? Before you dismiss what sounds to be the shower thoughts of a college drop-out conspiracy theorist still living in his mom’s basement, hear me out.

Larry Silverstein, the man who owned the World Trade Center signed the 99 year lease just 6 weeks before the attacks. On August 6, 2001, approximately 6 weeks before 9/11, President Bush was handed a presidential memo titled “Bin Laden Determined to Strike in US” and let us remember that the CIA had been picking up on chatter regarding Al-Qaeda and their intentions to carry out a large-scale attack against the US (mentioned in the Oscar winning movie Zero Dark Thirty). And finally, the insurance claim on the World Trade Center originally covered 3.31 billion dollars, but Silverstein would end up getting a payout of 4.25 billion dollars after 6 years of legal proceedings. One instance is an anomaly, two is a coincidence, three, however, is a pattern.

My concern is not the possibility that the government lied, but if my late night shower thoughts turned out to be true, what would that do to America. Our country is built on the foundation of our government, and the trust the American people place in it. The American identity took a hit after the CIA was exposed for their enhanced interrogation techniques revealing the true animalistic nature of American intelligence agencies. America was supposed to be the exception, a country where everyone had free and equal opportunity, a country run by a government that the people can trust, a government that stands up for its citizens, not one that uses them as expendable subjects to improve the bottom line. While it may seem implausible that the United States is secretly an oligarchy that funded, helped plan, and execute the terrors of 9/11, learning the truth would not be the worst thing.  If 9/11 really was an inside job, if America really is run by billionaires that have politicians under their thumbs in the form of campaign donations, what happens?

It would start with worldwide humiliation, alienation, the reduction of our economy to dust, allies would turn to enemies, America’s vulnerability would breathe a new life into its foes. In other words, the complete and total erosion of the American identity, so for all of our sakes, I hope I’m wrong.  911 Conspiracy Posters for Sale | Redbubble

  1. Hi Ranvir! I appreciate your bold question. It definitely would affect Americans deeply, especially considering how deep patriotism formed following 9/11. Your piece caused me to go down a rabbit hole of 9/11 conspiracy theories on TikTok, which I know is not the most reliable source. It left me reflecting on how fragile national identity really is. I too hope 9/11 wasn’t an inside job because that’s a mess I don’t think America is ready for.

  2. Hi Ranvir! I thoroughly enjoyed your blog post! I think it is an important topic to talk about, while I don't personally believe that 9/11 was an inside job, there are many people who do! The debate usually stems from how the U.S. reacted and retaliated against the Middle East during the ‘War on Terror.’ Our country has done some questionable things in the name of democracy, but I would be confused as to why we would orchestrate such a huge and terrifying attack when our leaders already had such a large stake in the region before the events of September 11th?

  3. Hey Ranvir! Wow, I love the humor scattered throughout your blog post! I hope for all our sakes that you’re wrong, but many conspiracy theories like the 9/11 one do exist. Agatha Christie once said “one coincidence is just a coincidence, two coincidences are a clue, and three coincidences is evidence”, a variation of which you alluded to, which I do think prompts some people to question the government’s potential role. I completely agree that national identity would be really shaken not just in the US but also as other countries' perception of us. I love how our 9/11 research last week in class got you thinking about it creatively!
